Instrumentation

The SnowImager is a field instrument designed to capture high-resolution near-infrared reflectance images of snow profiles. An integrated illumination system and dual cameras operate within a light-shielded housing, ensuring stable and reproducible measurements.

The SnowImager is available in two configurations: a non-foldable unit (approx. 440 × 470 × 330 mm, ~5.0 kg) and a foldable unit for improved transportability (440 × 500 × 330 mm unfolded, 440 × 500 × 110 mm folded, ~6.7 kg). Both versions are powered by an external 24V battery unit.

For data acquisition, the device is placed directly against the snow profile. Each measurement includes a dark reference image, which together with reflectance targets of known properties is used for calibration, and an illuminated reflectance image of the same area.

For density measurements, an attachable grid plate introduces narrow vertical slits between the instrument and the snow surface. This configuration enables the acquisition of reflectance signals required to derive snow density.

The imageable area is approximately 300 × 400 mm. Larger profiles can be captured by acquiring overlapping images and stitching them during post-processing. Images and metadata are stored on a connected USB storage device and can be accessed in the field via a wireless connection through a dedicated browser-based interface.
